WordPress is one of the most popular CMS out there. It’s ease of use along with the speed that it can offer when configured properly is why many people, small and large websites alike, use it to build their website.

While you can go for a number of shared hosting plans with different hosting providers and what not, if you have a WordPress website then you might be willing to consider a managed WordPress hosting solution.

This is where providers like WP Engine come in, offering services dedicated to WordPress and ensuring everything runs smoothly with the most optimal experience.

Before we take a look at all of the services WP Engine offers, it is important to know a bit about the company itself.

With our detailed review of WP Engine, we will be covering all of the features and the pros or cons you can expect from choosing WP Engine as your next hosting provider.

WP Engine General Hosting Overview

Starting at $30/mo, the startup plan is suited for small websites and provides up to 25,000 monthly visitors, 10 GB of storage and 50 GB of bandwidth each month. You also get 35+ premium StudioPress themes which are included with every other plan as well.

WP Engine Growth Plan

With a price of $115/mo, the growth plan is geared towards medium sized websites. With the growth plan, you can have up to 100,000 monthly visitors, 20 GB of storage, 200 GB of bandwidth and can host up to 10 different websites. Phone support is also available with this plan.

WP Engine Scale Plan

Priced at $290/mo, the scale plan is offered for bigger websites that are expecting a lot of traffic. You get a limit of 400,000 visits per month, 50 GB of storage, up to 500 GB of bandwidth and can host 30 different websites.

WP Engine Custom Plan

For the people who believe that one of the regular plans simply won’t cut it for their needs, they can go for a custom plan. Users have the option of customizing the resources they need and will pay according to the options they choose. This can be considered as the dedicated hosting equivalent of WP Engine.

We want to make it clear at this point that we here at Host Review have a very strict policy of publishing unbiased reviews and providing authentic and verified information. We believe that an honest review can help you make a sound decision by being aware of the pros and cons of going with a particular hosting provider.

Here we will be discussing all of these pros and cons. For this review, we decided to go with the Startup plan since the performance is similar across all of the plans offered by WP Engine. The only difference is the number of resources you get and certain extra features. Since WP Engine is a dedicated WordPress hosting service, we went with the latest version of WordPress and got a demo website up and running with the default theme.

WP Engine Pros

Despite being launched in 2010, WP Engine has been able to really make a name for itself in the hosting provider space. They claim to offer an uptime of 99.95% and even 99.99% for those with enhanced SLA and definitely deliver on these claims. The loading speed on both desktop and mobile is excellent as well.

Let us go ahead and take a look at some of the pros of WP Engine in detail.

Excellent Uptime of 99.95%

Uptime is one of the most important metrics for gauging the performance of a hosting provider. It essentially represents the amount of time that a server is up and running. After checking over a period of a year, we found out that the uptime offered by WP Engine was at 99.99% which is better than what they promise.

Any duration during which a website is not available can result in lost customers or leads which can greatly affect a business in the long run. Some of the big names in the hosting world shy away from providing a guarantee for uptime but WP Engine not only provides a guarantee but also delivers it.

Blazing Fast Speeds

Loading speed is yet another core metric for any hosting provider. Even if your website is always available, there is no point if the loading time is sluggish. This will always result in bad visitor experience and will cost you customers or visitors eventually.

That is why WP Engine makes sure that their servers are equipped with the most cutting edge technologies to deliver fast loading speeds. The NGINX extension and SSD work in tandem to prioritize human requests over system requests which improves load times. The SSD also works to avoid RAM saturation. Their data centers are spread across 18 different locations across the world so that visitors on your website get consistent speed regardless of where they access it from.

From a server in New York, it took less than a second for the time to first byte (TTFB) which is crazy for a hosting provider. In fact, it was faster than 96% of the websites tested on pingdom.

Included CDN with Each Plan

WP Engine makes sure to include free CDN services with each of the plans that they offer. Offering the CDN service is StackPath, formerly known as MaxCDN. Every WP Engine customer has access to StackPath services and can configure everything with a single click. This means that even newbies can have everything set up and going in no time.

Using a CDN can help a lot since it allows for reduced latency regardless of location and will improve your website loading speed. Some hosting providers will charge extra for a CDN service, however, WP Engine will provide you one for free which is excellent in our opinion.

Scalable Architecture with EverCache

WP Engine has been making use of their own architecture called EverCache to ensure that your website stays up and running even during the time of extreme load or traffic spikes. That way you never get to experience any downtime whatsoever.

To make sure that this works seamlessly, WP Engine makes use of the CDN services and caching techniques. RResponsive updating is also used any time you add new content to the website. To explain this in simple words, your website will be using CDN to deliver content quickly to visitors, cache all of the static content and will update your website every time you add or remove something, hence updating it.

Plenty of Security Features

Security is a primary concern whenever you are setting up a website. This is because every time you go online, you are opening yourself to different types of malicious attacks. It is important that whatever hosting provider you go with, offers a good set of security features built in so that you don’t have to spend a lot of time setting up and configuring everything yourself.

You will get a free SSL certificate with each hosting plan you purchase but that is not all, included is threat detention and blocking, prevention of web application attacks, DDos attacks, brute force attempts or SQL injection attacks. Daily backups of your website are also created and you have the option of restoring them whenever needed.

Top Notch Customer Support

WP Engine has a reputation for offering some of the best customer support around. They boast a 96% customer satisfaction rate which is quite impressive. Their support is available 24/7/365 via chat and you can also reach out to them via phone if you have any sales questions.

All other plans except for the startup plan also include technical support over the phone. Other than that, multiple channels are also there for other concerns and questions such as with billing or account related issues. WP Engine also offers plenty of information in their general knowledge base if there is something you wish to fix yourself.

Genesis Framework and Premium WordPress Themes

Another added benefit of going with WP Engine is that they offer a bunch of premium WordPress themes for StudioPress. This is really great if you are looking for themes to build your own website and do not want to spend a lot of money buying a premium theme.

Not only this, but you also get access to the Genesis Framework which allows for the creation of powerful websites in a daily quick manner. All of the themes carry search engine optimization which is another thing that you don’t need to spend much time on figuring out.

Easy to Use for Beginners

One of the difficulties beginners face is that setting up a server or even cPanel can seem quite overwhelming. WP Engine makes it easy for even beginners to configure everything, from SSL to CDN, they can all be set up with a single click.

Setting up of a website is also quite easy with dedicated areas for staging, development and deployment.

WP Engine Cons

No Option for Domain Registration

If you already own a domain, this should not be an issue, however, if you are looking to buy a domain then you cannot do so with WP Engine. You will have to purchase a domain name from another website or service before you can set up a website with WP Engine.

With this con, there is no incentive to get any of the plans if you are looking to score a free domain. You also cannot host your email services with them as well which can be a huge con for some people. You will have to go with a third party option in that case as well. G Suite usually runs around $5 per month per email account.

Certain Plugins Disallowed

WP Engine strongly believes that the infrastructure they provide to you has everything needed to run your website optimally. You don’t have to worry about any security or performance issues. However, this is an issue if you are migrating and use some of the plugins we are listing here. These will not be allowed.

  • Caching Plugins. WP Rocket is allowed and confirmed working
  • Any backup plugins like WP DB Backup
  • Related posts plugins like Similar Posts
  • Plugins that check for broken links
  • Image Optimizers unless you plan to use a cloud version

Conclusion

WP Engine is a great option if you are looking to get a reliable managed WordPress hosting service, however, there are some cons as well. These include no domain registrations or email setups and honestly, these can be a deal breaker for many people. If this is not an issue for you then we definitely recommend you go with WP Engine as your next WordPress hosting provider.
